How to save money on transfers from Beijing to the wild Jiankou Great Wall?
Don't book a tour! The cheapest tour I found still costs $80-$100 per person, and you will have a stranger (tour guide) hiking the Wall with you. It's kind of awkward, isn't it? And, if you are a slow hiker like I am who needs to take a break every 5 minutes, you might feel pressured to keep up with the tour guide and/or the group. Additionally, a simple pick up and drop off from Beijing still costs $150 roundtrip. So...what should you do? Take public transportation then transfer to a private driver! I only spent about 280 RMB (~$45) on transportation for this whole experience for 2 people!

Useful items to have for this outing...
Maps.me App - I used this on the Great Wall to ensure I was heading the right way. The map is accessible offline as long as you downloaded the Beijing map before you start your journey.
Cell Phone - a phone that you can contact your driver with. I have T-mobile, so it works internationally, and it only cost 25 cents to make a minute call. Worth it!
Food/Water - Mr. Wang recommended us to purchase water and food at the supermarket where he first met us at the bus station. The items in the supermarket are cheap, so it is a great place to stock up on water and snacks!
